Talking Tattoos with a Tattoo Artist (The Doom Room)
In this episode, I'm joined by Josh (@corpsewizardtattoos), a tattoo artist and owner of The Doom Room. Josh's passion and knowledge of the tattoo industry is evident throughout our conversation.
Josh, owner of The Doom Room tattoo studio, shares his journey and insights into the tattoo industry. Starting as someone who "just wanted to draw pictures and get paid for it", he found his way into tattooing through his second apprenticeship after working in liquor stores and sign writing.
His approach combines artistic skill with deep respect for the permanent nature of tattoos. He emphasises the importance of artist-client relationships, often becoming friends with clients through long sessions spanning multiple appointments. Josh takes pride in playing a small but integral part in people's journeys, whether it's helping them build confidence or commemorate loved ones.
The Doom Room, named by his wife Courtney, operates with a family-like atmosphere, hosting resident artists with different specialities. Josh stresses the importance of proper training and hygiene in the industry, warning against 'scratchers' who tattoo without proper apprenticeships.
Outside of tattooing, Josh finds balance through gardening, knife-making, and spending time with family. He emphasises the importance of having creative outlets beyond work and maintaining physical activity, noting that tattooing is largely sedentary.
His advice to aspiring tattoo artists is to "do it the right way" through proper apprenticeships, and to potential clients, he suggests finding an artist whose style and personality match their vision.
