TikTok Blew Up This 20-Year-Old's Business (Oakley Inkersell)

Oakley Inkersell started his car detailing business at age 19 after dropping out of university. Initially marketing through Facebook community groups, he gained traction by posting transformation videos on TikTok, growing to 40K followers. A viral video with half a million views helped book him solid for months.

Now 20, he's expanding from mobile-only services to opening a physical location at 504 Colombo Street, Christchurch. The premises includes 400m² of covered space suitable for storing 20-40 vehicles. His business primarily serves corporate clients who value the convenience of mobile detailing.

Oakley learned business fundamentals through online content, particularly following Alex Hosie. In school, he ran a successful card game business through the Young Enterprise Scheme, selling 500 units. He hired his first employee, Jack, a childhood friend who's been with the company for nine months.

Despite early success, Oakley emphasises that running a business is significantly harder than expected. He focuses entirely on growing the detailing business, reinvesting profits rather than taking personal drawings. His 10-year vision centres on providing for family and achieving stability rather than specific financial targets.

The next phase involves establishing the new premises, potentially hiring part-time staff, and continuing to build his personal brand alongside the business.
