From Athlete to Agent (Hayden Roulston)
One of New Zealand's most decorated cyclists, and two-time olympic medalist, Hayden Roulston reached the peak of his profession. After retiring from his 13-year career, he turned to coaching. Then Covid shook up the world and Hayden decided to pivot into a new career. Now, he's bringing his experience as an elite athlete to real estate, where he's going all in!
In this episode, Hayden Roulston shares his journey from Olympic cycling champion to real estate agent. Growing up in Ashburton, he participated in multiple sports before focusing on cycling at age 14. His Olympic career spanned three Games - Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 and Rio 2016 - with his greatest success coming in 2008.
After retiring in 2016, Roulston moved into coaching but found the travel demands challenging for family life. During Covid, a chance encounter with John McFadyen and Harts Gold led him to transition into real estate. He likens the company to "the biggest professional cycling team", with strong systems and support for continuous improvement.
Now two years into his real estate career, Roulston applies the same all-in mentality that served him in cycling. He emphasises the importance of building genuine connections with clients and taking a transparent approach through auction campaigns. Having recently sold his own home, he gained valuable perspective on the vendor experience.
Looking ahead, Roulston is focused on developing his skillset and standing out in a competitive market. He reflects that his Olympic success came from knowing exactly what he wanted and maintaining unwavering belief - principles he now applies to his real estate career. His story demonstrates how elite sporting mindset and work ethic can transfer successfully to business.
