Josh Komen

Josh Komen was an elite runner, until cancer tried to strip him of everything. Determined not to lose hope, Josh fought a battle most couldn't even imagine

In this episode, Josh Komen shares his remarkable journey from elite runner to cancer survivor. After being diagnosed with leukemia at 23, Josh's 11-year battle included multiple treatments, heart attacks, and the development of graft-versus-host disease. Despite immense physical challenges, he discovered resilience through breathing techniques, cold exposure, meditation and the unwavering support of his family.

Josh met his now-wife Syl, a Swiss oncology nurse, on a flight to Melbourne during his treatments. Their serendipitous meeting led to marriage and they now live on the West Coast of New Zealand with their daughter.

Today, Josh is an author and speaker who advocates for accessible wellness practices like proper breathing, movement, connection and nutrition. He runs workshops focusing on stress management and shares his story to help others find hope in difficult circumstances. His book details this journey and he's currently working on a second.

The conversation explores themes of resilience, the importance of perspective, and finding meaning through adversity. Josh emphasises how suffering taught him about authentic human connection and the power of showing up for others in their darkest moments. Despite ongoing physical limitations from his treatments, he maintains an active lifestyle and is training for an upcoming 10K race to raise funds for Ronald McDonald House.

Throughout the discussion, there's a strong focus on the West Coast lifestyle, community and untapped potential of the region.
