All About Solar Electricity (Matt Callaghan)
Matt Callaghan became an electrician straight out of high school. He always knew he wanted to start a business and even had the idea for Zero Electrical long before it became a reality. Now, Matt's business provides top-quality electrical services and renewables, and has quickly grown to become one of the top trusted names in the electrical industry.
Matt Callaghan, founder of Zero Electrical, shares his expertise on solar energy systems and renewables in New Zealand. Their most popular package is a 5kW system with 12-16 panels, costing around $12,000, offering a comprehensive service from design to installation.
Using advanced software and Google Earth, they can assess roof suitability and design systems without initially visiting properties. The technology allows them to calculate efficiency, consider shade factors, and determine optimal panel placement.
Currently, only about 2% of New Zealand homes have solar compared to 30-40% in Australia. Systems typically pay for themselves within 7-10 years, with panels guaranteed for 30 years. While solar won't completely eliminate power bills due to fixed line charges, it can reduce costs by 50-80%.
Zero Electrical partners with Energizer, offering an integrated ecosystem of panels, inverters, batteries and EV chargers. They focus on residential and smaller commercial installations, with systems ranging from $6,000 to $40,000. Green loans at 0-1% interest are available through major banks.
Matt emphasises the importance of using certified installers, noting the presence of "cowboys" in the industry due to limited regulation. Looking ahead, he predicts power companies will offer more competitive buyback rates as New Zealand pursues its goal of 100% renewable energy by 2030.
